The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 (and runs through November 30) and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has already warned communities up and down the eastern seaboard and in and around the Gulf of Mexico to expect “above normal” storm activity this year.

- [OSI & SCW Forecast a Sharp Uplift in Submarine Telecom Cable Activity in Q3/Q4](https://oceanspecialists.com/news/blog/osi-scw-forecast-a-sharp-uplift-in-submarine-telecom-cable-activity-in-q3-q4/): Ocean Specialists, Inc. (OSI) and SubCableWorld (SCW) have joined forces to release a forecast for both the global and Asia-Pacific submarine telecom cable markets, as the global economy begins its recovery.
The global submarine cable market appears to be ready to awaken from its nine-month slumber that began in the latter half of 2019 and extended into the first four months of 2020. Despite the slow start, OSI and SCW estimate that 2020 should rebound sharply to end the year up from 2019, at about 80,000 route-km of new contracts in total for the year.
While other industries, such as travel and retail, will continue to face economic difficulties in the wake of Covid-19, the very factors driving such hardship are bolstering the types of activities that are reliant on global submarine fiber optic cables – mostly, content streaming and videoconferencing.

- [Subsea Oil & Gas Network Development in Angola](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/subsea-oil-gas-network-development-in-angola/): Challenge Angola’s maturing offshore oil and gas industry is a source of national pride, with aggressive exploration and development underway by many of the world’s largest oil and gas operators. This rapid expansion has created the need for operators to efficiently and reliably connect deep water assets and remote shore bases for critical activities such as asset and safety management exploration, site monitoring, and production optimization. Solution OSI has led all technical aspects of a program in which the concessionaire has joined together with a consortium of operators to plan and deliver broadband fiber connections to many of their key, high-value assets. Since the beginning of this program, OSI has worked closely with the operators managing route planning, platform access, technology assessment, and vendor negotiation and selection. In addition to operational efficiencies gained by a shared fiber-to-the-platform plan, operators also benefit from OSI’s work assisting the development of a comprehensive risk-mitigation strategy.
- [Oil & Gas, Telecom Submarine Network Gulf of Thailand](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/oil-gas-telecom-submarine-network-gulf-of-thailand/): The longest network built to date to serve both oil and gas and telecom customers was commissioned in early 2014 in the Gulf of Thailand. Beginning with initial technical and commercial feasibility studies in 2005, OSI worked to bridge the disparate ownership and operational needs of the oil and gas providers with those of a local telecom provider.
- [OSI Manages ICN2 Submarine Fiber Network Build](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/osi-manages-icn2-submarine-fiber-network-build/): Challenge The Solomon Islands, like many other sparsely populated Asia-Pacific islands, are connected to the rest of the world through satellite service, making communications slow and expensive. Solution After their successful completion of Interchange Cable Network 1 (ICN1), where Interchange Limited (ICL) provided Vanuatu with its first FO connection, the company turned its focus to providing high-speed connectivity to their neighbor to the north, the Solomon Islands. OSI began working with ICL at the business model stage of this network. We continued supporting ICL through the procurement process and vendor adjudication, to eventually become the project manager of their ICN2 cable network giving us full technical and contractual responsibility over the project.
- [OSI Leads Network Development of Monet](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/osi-leads-network-development-of-monet/): Challenge Developing onward high-capacity connectivity for the strategic South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) is crucial to Angola Cables and the global community they serve. Monet extends the reach of the SACS network to North America, providing a much-needed transatlantic capacity cable of linking Africa, India, and Asia to North America via the Southern Hemisphere. Solution Similar to OSI’s involvement in SACS, we were embedded with the Angola Cables network development and executive teams in all aspects of this project. After successfully identifying and developing key strategic partnerships on behalf of Angola Cables, OSI is leading the partner working committees, network and technology assessments, and landing station vetting and selection. OSI oversaw all construction, installation, commissioning, and initial operations and management processes on behalf of Angola Cables during the life of the project.
- [OSI Lead Tonga Submarine Fiber Network Build](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/osi-lead-tonga-submarine-fiber-network-build/): OSI provided network design, engineering, project management, quality assurance, and oversight of planning, installation, and commissioning activities. OSI took a critical advisory role to support TCL through the procurement and negotiation process for the network and also supported the negotiations for a long-term cable maintenance contract.
- [OSI Lead ATISA Submarine Fiber Network Build](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/osi-lead-atisa-submarine-fiber-network-build/): Challenge The Northern Mariana Islands were served by a single fiber optic cable, quickly reaching its design life. With no redundancy to support their high-speed communications, these islands were at risk of suddenly losing their communication to the rest of the world, which occurred on July of 2015 after their single cable was cut. Solution DOCOMO Pacific led the way to building a second subsea fiber-optic connection to the Northern Mariana Islands and brought on OSI to take a technical lead on this critical infrastructure system, with responsibilities ranging from technical assessment, route survey and design, to RFP adjudication, supplier negotiation and manufacturing and installation oversight.
- [Strategic Advisory Services – Major Defense Firm](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/strategic-advisory-services-major-defense-firm/): A major US defense firm sought to find applications for its undersea robotics technology and products in the global commercial undersea markets.
- [Marine Operations – Gulf of Mexico Cable Installation](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/marine-operations-gulf-of-mexico-cable-installation/): A major oil and gas producer needed to upgrade their existing microwave communications to subsea fiber on two of their critical shallow water platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The upgrade would coincide with a planned maintenance shutdown of both facilities within four months. OSI was tasked to lead the planning, procurement, engineering, and execution of the installation.
- [Network Development of South Atlantic Cable System](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/network-development-of-south-atlantic-cable-system/): Challenge Rich in natural resources, and with an aggressive strategy to invest in telecom infrastructure development, Angola has embarked on a plan to position the country as a central hub for Africa’s growing broadband needs. A critical link in that strategy is a transatlantic cable system, linking Angola and Brazil, to provide much needed capacity in the Southern Hemisphere. Solution From the company’s inception, OSI has worked closely with Angola Cables to assist the executive team in developing a global network strategy, network funding, structure arrangements and partnering options for this critical network. OSI team members led design of the network architecture, technology assessments, and negotiations of all vendor and supplier agreements. OSI will manage network construction and installation aspects for the project through final system verification and close-out.
- [Prototype Design – Deep-Water Long-Term Monitoring System (LTMS)](https://oceanspecialists.com/projects/prototype-design-deep-water-long-term-monitoring-system-ltms/): In light of developing regulatory requirements to provide passive acoustic monitoring and marine mammal detection, Oil and Gas producers in the Gulf of Mexico sought to develop a seabed-based permanent monitoring system that would provide the necessary data to support regulatory compliance, as well as operational data to support deep water field operations.
