Capacity LATAM 2022: Latin America Goes from Strength to Strength

As a welcome change to the “not-so-new-normal” requirement of virtual-only conferences, Capacity LATAM 2022 in Miami from 15-16 March 2022 was at long last an in-person affair, with organizers reporting an attendance of over 700 delegates from more than 40 countries at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami over the three days.

This year’s meeting offered visitors and exhibitors alike with a long-awaited opportunity to network face-to-face in the provided meeting rooms, the bustling exhibition hall, and at several cocktail receptions.

The OSI team was delighted to reconnect with partners new and old and was particularly inspired by day two’s Subsea Session, which featured exclusive industry-leading insights from NJFX, Google, Digicel Marine, LUMEN, Infinera, Sparkle, Seaborn, Telxius, GlobeNet, Telstra, EllaLink, and Angola Cables.

As always, the conference delivered a comprehensive overview of strategic market developments and engaging panel discussions about regional digitization, key projects, and broader connectivity demands under the spotlight. Details aside, the overwhelming consensus at Capacity LATAM 2022 was that Latin America will remain a key growth market for the foreseeable future.

Telegeography’s regional trends suggest a 40% Year-On-Year data growth rate, which, while varying somewhat from country to country, points to strong and consistent outlook throughout LATAM in terms of transmission and capacity. Amid the many opportunities, subsea cables and datacenters will prove significant for 5G roll-out, Smart Cities, Smart Agriculture, the ongoing development of the Internet Of Things, and ultimately the utilitarian mission to “connect the unconnected.”

The Caribbean subsea fiber optic cable market continues to wrangle the infrastructure development challenges faced by smaller populations with limited economies. Sustained financial offshoring will still drive some connectivity to the islands but support from development banks and infrastructure funds will surely help builds in the future. OSI is fully committed to supporting submarine cable developers in the region and to ultimately bringing more and more Caribbean communities online through new routes—investments that will sunsequently add further broadband support to LATAM as a region.

OSI would like to thank Capacity Media for another fruitful conference, and we look forward to attending Capacity LATAM 2023 next year.
