Ocean Specialists Inc. (OSI) attended and moderated another fascinating Submarine Networks World (SNW) in Singapore, held at the Suntec Convention and Exhibition center the 16th through the 19th of September. Tony Mosley, Director of Business Development at OSI, moderated a panel on Innovative technologies deployed in Disaster Prevention and Management, with the CEO of Avaroa Cables Dr. Ranulf Scarborough, CEO of PC1 Takahiro Sumimoto, and Terrance Fong, Partner at ERM.
The interesting topical discussion revolved around advancement in Submarine cable technology to identify anomalies prior to failures, PC1’s disaster response following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, necessary requirements for new single-threaded cable systems to maintain backup plans, and lastly, the importance of maintaining critical and detailed information for Regulatory and Permitting agencies to facilitate the speedy permit issuance during disasters.
The Opening Session featured a subsea panel from across the planet with Elaine Stafford of DRG, Brian Maas of RTI, Mike Constable of Huawei, Paul Abfalter of Telstra, Funke Opeke of Main One, and Bill Barney of Global Cloud Exchange. The group discussed prepping for the next wave of changes in the subsea industry: The convergence of datacenters and cable landing stations, the insatiable demand for bandwidth, and the coming changes of 5G in the network and of course, the buzz over SDN and 16 fiber pair cables becoming more of a reality in subsea networks as an alternative to reaching Shannon’s Limit.
This year’s SNW had a 1-day Masterclass which covered Financing your Cable and building a Business Case in the morning. There were two tracks in the afternoon one covering Overcoming Regulatory hurdles and the other Ciena’s State of the Submarine industry – Past, Present and Future Technology.
