Challenge
A major oil and gas producer needed to upgrade their existing microwave communications to subsea fiber on two of their critical shallow water platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The upgrade would coincide with a planned maintenance shutdown of both facilities within four months. OSI was tasked to lead the planning, procurement, engineering, and execution of the installation.
Solution
OSI procured the undersea fiber optic cable, designed the J-Tubes and topside terminations, planned the route using existing customer-supplied charts, including 17 buried crossings on live gas pipelines, and obtained Federal and State permits for the route. Using a customer-furnished pipeline installation barge, OSI converted the platform for cable installation and burial to 1.5 meters and provided the project management and deck crew for the installation. The entire project was completed within 90 days from the proposal to demobilization.
